Hooper's Island
Hoopers Island
Go for one day, not a stay: drive MD-335 from Cambridge, eat crab, watch the sunset, sleep back in Cambridge.
Hooper's Island is a three-island chain of low marsh and watermen's communities in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, about 400 people at Fishing Creek, reached only by MD-335 from Cambridge. There is no hotel on the island, so it works as a half-day to full-day drive with a seafood meal and a sunset, not as a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel, motel or campground on the islands: book a base in Cambridge or Church Creek before you drive out.
- Cell coverage is patchy in places; download your map and any booking details before you leave Cambridge.
- Roads are low and can flood in storms and high tides; check conditions after heavy rain.
- Seafood houses and charters are seasonal and can close without much notice: call ahead.
- Marsh edges and docks are not fenced; keep children back from the water.
Very low crime; the real risks are water, weather and isolation. No lifeguards, no hospital on the island, and the nearest emergency room is in Cambridge, about 40 min away.
