Homer
Homer, Alaska
Give Homer 2–3 nights: one full day on the Spit and harbor, one for the town, trails and museum. Skip it as a day trip from Anchorage — the drive is 4–5 h each way.
Homer sits at the end of the Sterling Highway on the Kenai Peninsula, on Kachemak Bay. The Spit — a 4-mile sandbar with the harbor, charters and shops — is the tourist core, but the town itself, up on the bluff, is where people live. Most visitors come for halibut fishing, wildlife boats and the view back over the bay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Kachemak Bay tides can swing up to about 30 ft in a day: never let a beach walk cut off your return.
- It is windy and cold on the water at any time — bring layers and rain gear.
- Bear awareness on trails, especially late summer near berry patches.
- Many Spit businesses close around mid-September and reopen in April.
- Sales tax applies here: 3% borough plus 4.5% city, on the first $500 of a purchase.
Homer is a small, low-crime town and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are weather and water: sudden wind and cold on the bay, big tides on the beaches, and bears on backcountry trails.
