Base on Hollywood Beach for 2–3 nights: the Broadwalk is the trip. Skip it if you want a city — Miami and Fort Lauderdale do that better.
Hollywood sits between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and its reason to exist for a traveller is a 4 km oceanfront Broadwalk — a paved pedestrian and bike path with the beach on one side and low-rise hotels, bars and pizza counters on the other. Downtown, 5 km inland, is small and walkable but secondary. Two nights covers the beach properly; three if you add a day trip. A car helps for everything except the Broadwalk itself.

Get around
The Broadwalk is walkable and bikeable end to end. Everything else needs a car, a rideshare or a bus: Broward County Transit runs along the coast and downtown, but slowly. Tri-Rail commuter trains link Hollywood with Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach; Amtrak stops here too. Rent a car away from the airport for a lower rate.
