Holland is a small Lake Michigan town of about 33,000 people, built on Dutch immigrant heritage and two things that pull visitors: Tulip Time in May and Holland State Park, a white-sand beach with dunes about 15 minutes west of downtown. Downtown is eight walkable blocks of shops and breweries. You need a car — the beach, the gardens and the windmill are spread out and buses are limited. Two nights covers it; three if you add Saugatuck or Grand Rapids.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: downtown, Windmill Island, the tulip gardens and the state park are 5–20 min apart. Macatawa Area Express (MAX) buses run a downtown loop and stop at the Amtrak station on Lincoln Ave; single trip about $1, day pass about $2 (check current fares and times). Amtrak's Pere Marquette runs daily between Grand Rapids and Chicago with a stop in Holland.
