Spend a half‑day to a full day in Hofu: see the Tenman‑gū shrine and Mōri Museum, then grab a drink; travel time from Shin‑Yamaguchi is ~15 min by train.
Hofu, former provincial capital of Suō, sits on the San’yō Main Line. It is a quick stop between Yamaguchi and Shimonoseki, offering a historic shrine, a museum with national treasures, and a lively night bar. One day covers the main sights; a half‑day works if you’re on a regional train itinerary.
