Hobart
One day in Hobart: the best itinerary
Start at Salamanca Place and Battery Point in the morning, walk the waterfront to Constitution Dock for lunch, then spend the afternoon at MONA and finish on kunanyi/Mount Wellington at sunset. One day covers the core if you have a car or take the MONA ferry; skip MONA and you free three hours for Richmond or the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

Top picks
Hobart is small enough that one day is a real day, not a rush, as long as you pick one big thing. The city centre, Salamanca and the waterfront sit within about 2 km of each other and are walkable. MONA sits upriver at Berriedale and takes half a day once you count the ferry. Mount Wellington (kunanyi) is a 30–40 minute drive from the centre and is the one stop that needs wheels or a tour.
If you have a car, do the loop below and see everything. Without a car, keep the morning walk, take the MONA ferry after lunch, and swap the sunset drive for the waterfront or Battery Point at dusk.
| Stop | Time needed | Cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Salamanca Place and Battery Point | 1.5–2 hours | Free |
| Constitution Dock and waterfront | 1 hour | Free to walk; lunch A$20–35 |
| MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) | 3–4 hours with ferry | About A$40 entry; ferry extra |
| kunanyi / Mount Wellington summit | 1.5–2 hours return by car | Free; shuttle or tour A$30–50 |
| Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens | 1 hour | Free entry; some glasshouses charge |
| Richmond village (alternative) | 3 hours return | Free to walk; bus or tour A$30–60 |
Prices and hours
Most of the day is free. You pay for MONA, transport up the mountain and food. Salamanca Market runs on Saturdays and is the busiest morning of the week; on other days the same street is quiet and the sandstone warehouses are the draw.
MONA is closed on some weekdays outside peak season, so check the day before you travel. The ferry runs a reduced timetable in winter. Mount Wellington's summit road can close in ice or snow, and the temperature at the top is often 10 °C below the city.
| Item | Price (2026 estimate) | Hours / notes |
|---|---|---|
| MONA entry, adult | About A$40 | Usually 10:00–17:00, closed some weekdays |
| MONA ferry, return | About A$25–30 | About 25–30 minutes each way |
| Mount Wellington shuttle or tour | A$30–50 | Half-day departures from the centre |
| Salamanca Market | Free to browse | Saturdays, morning to early afternoon |
| Coffee and bakery breakfast | A$8–15 | Cafés open from about 07:00 |
| Lunch at Constitution Dock | A$20–35 | Fish and chips, seafood, pubs |
| Dinner in Battery Point or North Hobart | A$30–60 | Book ahead on weekends |
How to get there
Hobart Airport is about 20 km east of the centre; the drive takes 20–25 minutes outside peak, and the airport shuttle runs to the city. Taxis and rideshare cost more but are simple with luggage.
In the city, everything in the morning loop is walkable. Buses cover the suburbs and North Hobart; a day ticket is the cheap option if you are not driving. For MONA, the ferry from Brooke Street Pier is the pleasant route and the bus is the cheaper one. Mount Wellington needs a car, a shuttle or a tour — there is no public bus to the summit.
- Airport to centre: 20–25 minutes by car or shuttle
- Centre to Salamanca: 10–15 minutes on foot
- Centre to MONA by ferry: about 25–30 minutes
- Centre to Mount Wellington summit: 30–40 minutes by car
- Parking in Salamanca and Battery Point: metered and limited, easiest before 09:00
Tips
Weather changes fast. Hobart can be 22 °C and sunny at noon and 12 °C and windy by 16:00, and the mountain is colder again. Carry a light waterproof layer and a warm mid-layer even in summer.
Book MONA and any mountain tour before you arrive in peak season (December–February and around the Sydney to Hobart yacht race finish in late December). Eat lunch early or late to avoid the 12:30–13:30 crush at the docks.
If you only have one day and want a slower version, drop MONA and add Richmond or the Botanical Gardens. If you have a second day, use it for the Tasman Peninsula or the Huon Valley.
- Layer up: the summit is often 10 °C colder than the city
- Book MONA and tours ahead in summer
- Saturday means Salamanca Market crowds — go early
- Sunset at the summit needs a car and a clear forecast
- Keep the evening free for Battery Point or North Hobart dinner
Questions people ask
What can you see in one day in Hobart?
Salamanca Place and Battery Point in the morning, the waterfront and Constitution Dock at lunch, MONA in the afternoon and kunanyi/Mount Wellington at sunset. That is the full core. Without a car, swap the mountain for the Botanical Gardens or an evening walk along the docks.
Is one day enough for Hobart?
Enough for the city core and one big attraction, yes. It is not enough for MONA plus Mount Wellington plus Richmond. Two days lets you add the Tasman Peninsula or the Huon Valley; three days is comfortable.
Where should I start with one day in Hobart?
Start at Salamanca Place around 08:00–08:30, before the market and café crowds build. Walk through Battery Point, then follow the waterfront to Constitution Dock for an early lunch before heading to MONA or up the mountain.
