Hobart
Best time to visit Hobart: weather, crowds and events by month
Go in February or March for the warmest settled weather, or in December–January if you want the Sydney to Hobart finish and Taste of Summer and can accept peak prices. Choose November or April for lower prices and quieter trails. Winter is for MONA, Dark Mofo and indoor days, not for hiking.

Quick answer
Hobart sits in the Tasmania climate zone: the walking season runs November–April, snow is possible in the highlands in any month, and summer is the school-holiday peak. For most travellers the best window is February–March, when the holidays are over, days are still long and warm, and Mount Wellington and the Tasman Peninsula are at their most reliable.
If your trip is built around an event, the calendar decides for you: Dark Mofo in June, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race finish and Taste of Summer in late December, and the summer holidays from mid-December to late January. Winter is not a write-off — it is the cheapest season and the best time for MONA, the museum and food side of the city — but it is not the season for long walks.
Month by month
Use the table as a filter: pick the row that matches what you want to do, then check the crowd and price column before booking.
Summer days in Hobart average around 20–23 °C, but a front can drop them to 14 °C and the mountain can be 10 °C colder than the waterfront. Winter days sit near 12 °C with nights around 5 °C. Rain falls across the year rather than in one wet season, so pack a shell rather than timing around it.

| May | ok | low | low | Crisp and quiet; short days, some mountain roads icy (check) |
| June | ok | medium | medium | Dark Mofo fills the city for about a week; otherwise cold, dark and cheap |
| July | ok | low | low | Coldest month; indoor and food trips only, snow on the mountain |

Verdicts follow the site's Tasmania zone: best Nov–Apr, cool May–Sep. Crowd and price are relative to Hobart, not to Sydney.
Weather and what to pack
Hobart's weather changes fast and the mountain makes its own. A 22 °C day on the waterfront can be 12 °C with wind at the summit, so layers beat a single jacket. Bring a waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer, closed shoes for gravel and boardwalk tracks, and a hat and sunscreen for the long summer evenings — UV is strong even when the air is cool.
Summer daylight runs to about 15 hours in December, which is why late December and January feel generous for day trips to Richmond, Kingston and the Huon Valley. June drops to about 9 hours, so plan indoor stops between the short daylight windows.
Events and holidays that move prices
Three periods change what you pay and what you can book. Dark Mofo in June draws a national crowd for roughly a week and lifts city hotel rates. The Sydney to Hobart finish and Taste of Summer in late December overlap with the start of the summer school holidays, so the last week of December and the first week of January are the tightest of the year. Australia Day on 26 January is a public holiday with waterfront crowds; for many First Nations people it is a day of mourning, also called Invasion or Survival Day.
Outside those windows, Hobart is a medium-crowd city by Australian standards. February, March, November and early December give you the good weather without the holiday premium.
What it costs by season
Prices below are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room in the city or on the waterfront, booked two to three months ahead. Peak covers late December to late January plus Dark Mofo week; shoulder covers February–April and October–November; low covers May–August outside Dark Mofo.
Flights into Hobart follow the same pattern: fares rise for the summer holidays and around Dark Mofo, and the cheapest seats are usually Tuesday to Thursday in May–August. Airport transfers into the city are a fixed cost year-round — see the airport transfer page for the current options.
| Season | Months | Mid-range double (2026 estimate) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | Late Dec–late Jan, Dark Mofo week | 180–320 AUD | Book 2–3 months ahead; some places set minimum nights |
| Shoulder | Feb–Apr, Oct–Nov | 150–260 AUD | Best value for good weather |
| Low | May–Aug outside Dark Mofo | 130–220 AUD | Cheapest beds, shortest days |
Tips
- Book MONA and any Dark Mofo events before you book flights; both sell out.
- Put the mountain day early in the trip and keep a spare day for it — the summit road and the organ pipes track close in bad weather (check).
- If you want both city and nature, base in Hobart for four nights and add two in the Huon and Far South or the Derwent Valley.
- February and March give you warm days with normal prices; shift a week either side of the summer holidays if your dates are flexible.
- Winter visitors: check that your accommodation has heating and that your day-trip operator runs in June–August (check).
