Hitoyoshi is the southernmost city in Kumamoto prefecture, a small onsen and river town on the Kuma River, known for river fog from late autumn to early spring, kuma shochu spirits and ayu sweetfish. It is a terminal stop on the JR Hisatsu Line, so it works as a slow overnight between Kumamoto and Kagoshima rather than a day trip. Sights are few and close together; the reason to come is the river, the baths and the food.

Get around
The centre is small: the station, the castle ruin, Eikokuji and the onsen baths are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Buses run from the station to the craft park and outlying onsen hotels; a car or taxi is easier for the pheasant restaurant and the riverside hotels. Local trains on the Hisatsu Line link Hitoyoshi with Yatsushiro.

- The Hisatsu Line has been closed in sections after heavy rain in past years: check the current status with JR Kyushu before you plan a rail arrival.

- The Kuma River boat ride commentary is in Japanese; departures are limited to a few times a day, so book the slot you want.
- Small restaurants and shops close early and some shut one weekday; do not leave dinner to 21:00.
- Summer brings heavy rain and typhoons to this valley; keep a weather-check habit in Jun–Sep.
