Hitachi
日立市
Half a day for the coastline and Hitachi Civic Center; one night only if you want a quiet seaside stop between Tokyo and Sendai.
Hitachi is a mid-sized coastal city in Ibaraki Prefecture, best known for its industrial port and the Hitachi Civic Center complex. Most travellers pass through on the JR Joban Line between Tokyo and Tohoku. The city has a science museum, a planetarium and a few parks, but no major sight that demands a dedicated trip. Use it as a lunch break or a one-night stop if you want to break the Tokyo–Sendai rail journey.
