Skip Hirakata as a sightseeing stop: it is a commuter town. Use it only as a cheaper bed 30 min from Osaka and Kyoto on the Keihan line.
Hirakata is a commuter city of about 400,000 people on the Keihan Main Line, roughly 30 minutes from both central Osaka and eastern Kyoto. It has almost no headline sights. Its one real draw is Hirakata Park, a seasonal amusement park for families. Everyone else uses it as a quiet, cheaper base with fast trains to both cities.

Get around
Walk from Hirakatashi station for hotels and the mall. The ¥100 community bus links the station to points inside the city; Keihan buses cover the rest. Hirakata Park is a 5-minute walk from Hirakata-koen station, one stop away. Taxis queue at Hirakatashi.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- The Keihan line is awkward from Kansai Airport: two transfers minimum, and it is not a JR line, so a JR Pass does not cover it.
- Hirakata Park charges entry plus a fee per ride; the all-day pass only pays off if you ride a lot, and prices change in winter.
- Most sights are a bus ride from the station, not a walk: plan door-to-door time, not map distance.
- Last Keihan trains run around midnight; after that it is a taxi from Osaka or Kyoto.
Hirakata is a low-crime commuter city and feels safe at night around the station. The real risks are summer heat, bicycles on pavements and the last-train cutoff: miss it and you are paying for a taxi from Osaka or Kyoto.
