Hiraizumi
平泉
Give Hiraizumi one full day from Ichinoseki or Sendai: Chūson-ji first at opening, then Mōtsu-ji and the free World Heritage garden sites on foot.
Hiraizumi is a town of about 7,400 people in Iwate, on the JR Tohoku Main Line 10 minutes from Ichinoseki. In the 12th century the Fujiwara family made it a rival to Kyoto; six sites survive as a UNESCO World Heritage listing under the name Hiraizumi — Temples, Gardens, and Archaeological Sites Representing Pure Land Buddhism. The two big stops are Chūson-ji and Mōtsu-ji; the rest are ruins, ponds and markers that reward a slow walk rather than a checklist. Most travellers see it as a day trip and sleep in Ichinoseki, Sendai or Morioka.

Get around
The station sits between the two main temples: Mōtsu-ji is about 10 minutes on foot, Chūson-ji about 20 minutes or 5 by bus. Local buses link the station to the temple areas. Bicycle hire beside the station covers the outer sites and Takkoku no Iwaya; a full day was ¥1,000. The town is flat and walkable, but the walk between the far sites adds up.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Chūson-ji charges about ¥800 entry and the approach is uphill; allow 2–3 h.
- Mōtsu-ji charges about ¥500; the garden is grass and gravel, not a flower garden.
- Several World Heritage components are free ruins and ponds with little signage in English; read up first or the visit falls flat.
- Small restaurants close early and some shut one day a week; eat lunch near the temples rather than late in town.
- Winter brings snow and ice on the temple approaches; spring and autumn are the comfortable windows.
Hiraizumi is a small, quiet town and crime is not the concern. Watch the practical things: ice and snow on temple steps in winter, deer and bicycles on the paths, and the last local train back to Ichinoseki, which leaves early in the evening.
