Himeji is a castle town on the Sanyo Shinkansen, 30–60 min from Osaka or Kyoto. The white keep is the reason to come, and it is best seen in the first hour after opening. Most travellers sleep one night or pass through on the way to Hiroshima.

Get around
The castle, Kōkoen and the museums are a 15-min walk north of the station along Otemae-dōri. The Shinki Sightseeing Loop Bus circles the cultural area (¥190 single, ¥400 day pass). City buses run to Engyō-ji and outlying sights; the Sanyo line serves Tegarayama.
