Give it 3–4 nights: beach and bike mornings, golf or a dolphin tour in the afternoon. A car is near-mandatory; without one, stay at Coligny.
Hilton Head is a 19-km barrier island off the South Carolina coast, about 40 minutes from Interstate 95 and roughly an hour from Savannah. It is built around gated resort communities, 9 miles of public Atlantic beach, and more golf courses than you can play in a week. There is no real town centre: you pick a plantation or the Coligny area and drive or cycle between them. Three to four nights covers the beach, a bike loop, one boat trip and one round of golf; two nights is enough if you only want sand and seafood.

Get around
US 278 is the only road on and off the island and becomes William Hilton Parkway. It splits: US 278 Business is the slow surface road past the shops (25–30 min end to end), while the Cross Island Parkway is a free expressway that cuts the run to the south end to about 5 minutes. Bikes work well: most main roads have a companion path, though paths are unlit at night. The Breeze Trolley runs two free routes in the central island in summer, roughly every 30 minutes.
