Hillsborough
Royal Hillsborough
Half a day for the castle and gardens, then move on: Hillsborough is a village, not a base. Sleep here only if you want a quiet night outside Belfast.
Hillsborough is a Georgian village 12 miles southwest of Belfast, built around Hillsborough Castle, the royal residence in Northern Ireland and the official home of the Secretary of State. The village itself is small and walkable in an hour; the castle, gardens and forest park are what justify the trip. Most visitors see it as a half-day from Belfast or Lisburn, or as one quiet night on the road south to Newry and Dublin.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The castle house is closed in winter (roughly Nov–Mar); gardens and parkland stay open on a shorter day. Check the official site before travelling.
- Castle tours are timed and can sell out at weekends and school holidays: book online.
- Forest park car parks may be locked at dusk; check the gate times where you park.
- Village shops and cafés close early; the last buses back to Belfast thin out in the evening.
- The courthouse and fort interiors are closed to visitors: outside only.
Very low crime; the real risks are wet, unlit country roads at night, uneven paths in the forest park and the fact that the last buses to Belfast run early. Standard UK precautions apply.
