Hildesheim

Hildesheim is a Lower Saxony cathedral town of about 100,000 people, 30 minutes by train from Hanover and an ICE stop on the Berlin–Frankfurt line. Its old centre was 90% destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in the 1950s–70s, but the two UNESCO churches survived and the market square was reconstructed. The sights sit inside a 15-minute walk, so a single day covers the core and a night lets you eat and drink without watching the last train.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes; cycle paths cover most of the city. City buses cost €3.30 for adults and €1.65 for children, valid for 60 minutes with as many changes as you like (2026). A night bus network runs across the city and county at no extra charge. From July to December 2026 buses are free on Saturdays.
