Give Hikone one night, or a half day off the Biwako line: the original castle keep and Genkyū-en garden are a 15–20 min walk from the station.
Hikone sits on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, one local stop from the Shinkansen at Maibara and about 50 min by rapid train from Kyoto. Its draw is a rare original castle keep from 1604 with the garden below it, plus a small samurai museum. Two to three hours covers the core; a night lets you add Ryōtan-ji and the lake islands without rushing.

Get around
The centre is walkable: station to castle is 15–20 min on foot. Bikes rent by the day from stands at the station west exit (about ¥500–800; check hours). Local trains on the Biwako line link Minami-Hikone and Maibara; buses serve the outer sights.
