High Prairie

High Prairie is a town of about 2,600 in the Peace Country, on Highway 2 four hours northwest of Edmonton. It exists for travellers as a bed-and-fuel stop between Edmonton and Peace River, and as the closest town to the west end of Lesser Slave Lake. The lake beaches, Hilliard's Bay and the birding lakes north of town are the reason to stop; the town itself is a museum, a handful of diners and four motels.

Get around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes, but the lakes, the museum's out-of-town sights and the highway are not. Cold Shot runs intercity buses from Edmonton and Peace River with stops in Westlock and Slave Lake — check current days before you plan around it.
