Hickory is a furniture-manufacturing and shopping town in the North Carolina foothills, about 80 km northwest of Charlotte on I-40. Its draws are a handful of small museums, a NASCAR short track, minor-league baseball and outlet-scale furniture showrooms. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Blue Ridge mountains, or use it as a cheap bed outside Charlotte.

Get around
A car is close to essential: sights, malls and hotels are spread along I-40, US-70 and US-321. Greenway buses cover the city Monday–Friday from early morning to late afternoon, with a limited Saturday service; fare is $1.25 a ride with one free transfer, or $3 for a day pass, children under 5 free. Rideshare exists but wait times can be long outside the centre. Downtown one-way streets and local naming habits confuse visitors — ask for a landmark, not a street number.
