Hermosillo

Hermosillo is Sonora's capital and its biggest city, a modern, workaday place with little tourism and a lot of heat. It works as a one- or two-night stop between the US border and the Sonora coast: eat the carne asada, climb Cerro de la Campana, then move on to Bahía de Kino or Nogales. Summer is brutal — 40 °C and up — so plan around it.

Get around
Taxis are cheap and the default for visitors; agree the fare or use a hotel-arranged cab. City buses run every few minutes and cost about US$0.50, but routes are hard to read without Spanish — skip them unless you know the line.
