How to get there
Most visitors fly into Las Vegas and drive 2.5–3 hours northeast on Interstate 15, then Utah State Route 9 through Hurricane and La Verne. St George Regional Airport is closer, about an hour, with limited flights. From Salt Lake City it is roughly 4.5–5 hours.
There is no train or bus to the park gate. Once in Springdale you can walk or take the town shuttle to the pedestrian entrance; if you stay outside Springdale, you drive in and park, then ride the park shuttle. Parking at the visitor centre fills early in season — arrive before 8am or use the Springdale shuttle.
The east entrance via the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway is a scenic drive with a long tunnel; large vehicles need a tunnel permit.

When to go
Spring and autumn are the sweet spot: daytime temperatures around 15–25 °C, the Narrows usually runnable, and the shuttle operating. Wildflowers and runoff make May busy; fall colours and thinner crowds make late September and October the best all-round window.
Summer is the classic mistake. June to August brings 35 °C+ afternoons, thunderstorm flash-flood risk in the Narrows, and shuttle queues. If summer is your only option, hike at sunrise, rest midday, and check the flash-flood forecast before entering any slot canyon.
Winter is quiet and cheap, with snow on the rim and ice on shaded trails; the scenic drive sometimes opens to private cars. Check current conditions and carry traction devices.

What is nearby
Springdale lines the south entrance with hotels, restaurants and outfitters; it is the easiest base and walkable to the park. Hurricane and La Verne are cheaper, 30–45 minutes away. Bryce Canyon is about 2 hours northeast, and the Grand Canyon North Rim is roughly 2.5 hours south — both pair well with Zion on a southern Utah loop.
Tips
Book Springdale lodging and any in-park campsite weeks ahead for spring and fall. Carry more water than feels necessary: two litres per person for short walks, three to four for longer hikes, and refill at the visitor centre.
The Narrows is a river hike, not a trail — you wade in the Virgin River. Rent canyoneering shoes and a walking stick in Springdale, and never enter when flash floods are forecast. Angels Landing beyond Scout Lookout requires a lottery permit; apply online in advance.
Cell service is patchy in the canyon. Fuel up in Springdale or Hurricane before entering, and expect limited food inside the park.
