Getting there
Circular Quay is the hub: trains on the City Circle, light rail along George Street and ferries from across the harbour all stop there. From the wharves, walk east around the harbour for about 10 minutes; the building is visible the whole way. Check Transport for NSW for times, fares and weekend trackwork before you set out.
From the city centre it is a walk of roughly 20–25 minutes downhill via Macquarie Street or the edge of the Botanic Garden. Driving is the worst option: there is no public parking at Bennelong Point, and garages near the Quay fill early on weekends.

When to go
The forecourt is free and open to anyone, so the real question is timing. Early morning tends to be calmest, before tour groups build through the middle of the day, and late afternoon into sunset is the other good window, with the harbour light on the shells. Check the day's performance schedule before you plan around a tour, since halls can be closed for rehearsals or events.
For the season, follow the Australia-wide pattern: Sep–Apr is the milder half of the year in Sydney, and Dec–Jan is the hottest and busiest stretch, with school holidays and cruise-ship crowds at Circular Quay. Everything worth seeing is within a 20-minute walk. The Royal Botanic Garden starts immediately behind the Opera House and runs to Mrs Macquarie's Point, a free lookout over the harbour and the bridge. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a 25-minute walk or one ferry stop away; you can walk the pedestrian path across it for free, or pay for the bridge climb. For a swim, take a ferry to Manly or a bus to Bondi. Most visitors base themselves in the CBD or The Rocks and do all of this on foot and by ferry.
Tips
Book tours online in advance during school holidays and around major events; walk-up places can sell out. If you only want photos, you do not need a ticket at all — the outside is the attraction for most people.
The building is a working venue, so parts can be closed on any given day. Check the website the morning you plan to visit. Food and drink inside are priced for a captive audience; the cafés around Circular Quay and in The Rocks are cheaper and a few minutes away.
Bring a light layer even in summer: the harbour wind on the forecourt and steps can be cool, and there is little shelter if it rains. Public toilets are inside the concourse and near the box office when those areas are open.
