Henty
Give Henty half a day as a stop on the Olympic Highway, or come for the September field days; there is no public transport and no reason to sleep here otherwise.
Henty is a Riverina farming town of about 1,200 people on the Olympic Highway between Wagga Wagga and Albury, with a railway station on the Sydney–Melbourne line. Two small museums and a pub make up the town centre; the Henty Machinery Field Days in September are the one event that fills it. Everything sits within a five-minute walk of Railway Parade, and a car is the only practical way to arrive or leave.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you are limited to the town centre and the train station.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and fuel up before long drives.
- Fuel and food options thin out on the highway between towns; fill up in Wagga Wagga or Albury.
- Field days week in September books out local beds: reserve weeks ahead or stay in Wagga Wagga.
A quiet country town; the real risks are long, empty highway drives, summer heat and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Lock the car and keep water with you.
