Henley-in-Arden
Give Henley half a day on foot, not a night: walk the 1.6 km High Street, see the Guildhall and the churches, then move on to Stratford or Warwick.
Henley-in-Arden is a small Warwickshire market town of about 3,000 people, halfway between Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham. Its one-mile High Street is a conservation area lined with timber-framed houses, a 15th-century Guildhall and two old parish churches. There is no castle left, no museum of scale and no reason to base yourself here: the town is a two-to-four-hour stop, best folded into a Stratford or Warwick day. Trains run roughly hourly and the M40 junction is 5 minutes away, so it works as a break in a road or rail journey rather than a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains are roughly hourly and stop in the early evening: check the last departure before you plan a late return.
- Mobile coverage is 4G only, with dead spots on the approach roads; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
- Most of the sights are outdoor and unstaffed: church and Guildhall opening times vary, so check ahead.
- The castle site is an earthwork mound with nothing to see up close; do not build a visit around it.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the narrow High Street pavement beside traffic, unlit lanes after dark and icy pavements in winter. Standard UK advice applies: 999 for emergencies, 101 for non-urgent police matters.
