Hendersonville
Hendersonville, North Carolina
Give Hendersonville one full day plus a night: walk Main Street, then use it as a cheaper base for Flat Rock, Jump Off Rock and DuPont Forest.
Hendersonville is a small mountain town 22 miles south of Asheville, at about 2,200 ft, with a compact historic Main Street of shops, galleries and restaurants. Most travellers see downtown in half a day and spend the rest of the trip on the surrounding waterfalls, trails and the Carl Sandburg home. Two nights covers the town and one outdoor day; a third night only pays off if you are hiking or chasing waterfalls.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Mountain roads are two-lane, curvy and often foggy; deer at dusk are a real risk.
- Summer afternoons bring fast thunderstorms; be off exposed ridges and out of creek beds by mid-afternoon.
- Winter ice and snow close some forest roads and trails — check status before driving up.
- Cell signal drops in the DuPont and Pisgah backcountry; download offline maps.
- Alcohol rules and hours are set by North Carolina and the county; some places are dry or stop sales early — check locally.
Hendersonville is a low-crime small town and downtown is comfortable on foot after dark. The real risks are mountain driving — curves, fog, deer at dusk — and summer storms on exposed trails; carry water, tell someone your route and don't rely on phone signal in the forest.
