Helmsdale is a grid-planned fishing village of about 760 people on the Sutherland coast, roughly 2 h 30 min by train from Inverness. It is a stopping point on the far north line and the North Coast 500, not a destination in itself. The Clearances museum, the emigrants' memorial and the coastal ruins north and south are the reasons to break the journey.

Get around
The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. You need a car, bike or taxi to reach Clynelish Distillery, Badbea or the brochs; there is no local bus for those. Trains and the X99 coach stop in the village.

- Mobile coverage is 4G at best and Vodafone is weak; 5G has not reached the area.
- Many sleeps and cafés close or take group bookings only from November to March.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are single-track A9 driving, weather that turns fast on the coast path, and long gaps between services. Tell someone your route if you walk the cliffs.
