Helena
Helena, Montana
Give Helena one full day and one night: walk Last Chance Gulch and Reeder's Alley, drive to the Capitol, then leave for Butte or Great Falls.
Helena is Montana's capital and a gold-rush town: a pedestrian main street, a mansion district, a copper-domed Capitol and 120 km of in-town trails. It is small (about 32,000 people) and most sights sit within a 20-minute walk or a short drive. One night covers it; two if you add Gates of the Mountains or a Mount Helena hike.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: I-15 and US-12 can ice up; check road conditions before leaving.
- Gates of the Mountains boat schedule varies by month — check before driving out.
- Summer wildfire smoke can cut visibility; check air quality if you have breathing issues.
- Distances are long: the next big town, Butte, is about 100 km south.
Helena is a low-crime small city; the real risks are winter ice, long empty drives and summer wildfire smoke. Downtown is fine on foot after dark.
