Heidelberg

Give Heidelberg one full day and one night: castle and old town on foot, then leave. Two nights only if you add the Philosophenweg and Königstuhl.

Heidelberg is a small university city in the Neckar valley, 1 h from Frankfurt Airport by train. The whole visitable core — castle, Hauptstraße, old bridge, university — fits in a 2 km walk. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Frankfurt or as one stop on a Rhine-Neckar route, and one night is enough to have the old town to yourself after the coaches leave.

Get around

The centre is pedestrian: Hauptstraße runs 1.6 km from Bismarckplatz to the Karlstor. Trams and buses link the Hauptbahnhof with Bismarckplatz and the old town (bus 32/33 and tram lines); a single ride is about €2.80 and a day ticket about €6.70 (2026 estimate, check current fares). The funicular runs from the old town up to the castle and on to Königstuhl — the castle section is covered by the castle ticket, the upper historic section costs extra. Taxis from the station cost far more than the tram for the same trip.

Altstadt (old town)
Everything walkable, but noisy at night and the priciest beds. Best for one night without a car.
Bismarckplatz / Bergheim
Edge of the old town, tram hub, 5–10 min walk to the Hauptstraße. Good balance of price and access.
Bahnstadt / Hauptbahnhof
New quarter by the station; cheaper, modern hotels, 15 min by tram or 25 min on foot to the old town.
Neuenheim (north bank)
Quiet, riverside, close to the Philosophenweg path; 10 min over the bridge to the centre.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Castle grounds are free, but the inner buildings and the barrel cellar need a ticket (about €9, 2026 estimate).
  • The upper funicular to Königstuhl is a separate fare from the castle section.
  • Kurpfälzisches Museum closes Mondays.
  • Christmas market crowds in December; the market moved into the Altstadt, not the castle.
  • Neckarwiese barbecues are allowed only in the two marked cobbled zones — no disposable grills on the grass.

Heidelberg is a low-risk city; the practical issues are pickpockets in the Hauptstraße and Christmas market crush, dark unlit paths on the Philosophenweg and Heiligenberg after dusk, and bicycles on the riverside paths.
