Heide
Heide (Holstein)
Give Heide one night as a rail stop between Hamburg and the North Sea coast, or skip it and sleep in Büsum or Sankt Peter-Ording instead.
Heide is a small market town in Dithmarschen, 1 h 20 min by regional express from Hamburg-Altona and the rail gateway to the North Sea beaches at Büsum. Its one genuine sight is the market square, the largest unbuilt square in Germany at 4.7 hectares, which doubles as a car park. Most travellers use it for a night, a supermarket run or a wet-day pool stop rather than as a base.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes; bikes are the local default for anything further. Buses run from the ZOB to Rendsburg and neighbouring towns. A car helps for the coast, but the RE 6 train covers Büsum, Husum and Hamburg without one.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- The market square is mostly a car park: expect vehicles, not a pedestrian plaza.
- Coastal weather turns fast; wind and rain arrive with little warning even in July.
- Many kitchens close by 21:00 and some restaurants shut one weekday: check before walking over.
- Sunday trading is limited; supermarkets and the Marktpassage are closed or short on Sundays.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are wind and rain on the coast, dark unlit cycle paths after dusk, and the market square doubling as a car park.
