Heerenveen is a small Frisian town that became the sports capital of the north: Thialf is the country's biggest indoor ice arena and Abe Lenstra Stadion holds 27,000. Outside event days there is a compact old centre, a 17th-century castle-turned-town-hall and good shopping, but the real draw is the lakes and waterways around it. Most travellers use it as a rail stop between Leeuwarden and Zwolle, or as a base for cycling the Frisian Lakes.
