Havre

Give Havre one night on a US-2 or Amtrak stop: the buffalo jump and the underground tour fill a half-day, then drive on.

Havre is the biggest town on the Montana Hi-Line, a rail and highway junction 190 km north of Great Falls and 70 km from the Canadian border. Two sights carry the stop — the Wahkpa Chu'gn buffalo jump and the Havre Beneath the Streets underground tour — plus a dinosaur-trail museum. Everything sits along US-2, so you need a car or a taxi.

Get around

The town stretches several miles along US-2, so plan on a car: rent from Budget or call JJ's Lunar Taxi. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops at Havre station (235 Main St) with an unstaffed waiting room — no ticket machines or bag service, so print or store your ticket. Downtown is walkable once you park.

  • Wild Horse border crossing into Canada is 70 km north and one of the quietest ports — check hours before you commit.

A small, quiet town and generally safe to walk by day. The real risks are winter driving on US-2 and US-87, long empty stretches between services, and wildlife on the road at dusk.
