Harpenden is a wealthy commuter town in Hertfordshire, 25 minutes by train from London St Pancras and one stop from Luton Airport Parkway. There is no big sight: the draw is Harpenden Common, a green with cricket and pubs around it, plus two park and nature walks. Treat it as a half-day or a single night, not a destination in itself.

Walk. The town is small: station to the Common is about 10 min, station to the north end of the High Street about 15 min. Local buses link Luton, St Albans, Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City; a taxi is worth it only with luggage or a group.
