Harlech

Stay one night, not two: castle plus beach is a half day, and the town is a 20-minute stop on the Cambrian Coast line.

Harlech is a small Gwynedd town built around a 13th-century castle on a rock above the sea, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Edward I's castles and town walls in Gwynedd. The castle, the beach below it and the steep lane Ffordd Pen Llech are the whole visit; the rest of the time you are walking, eating in a handful of places, or riding the Cambrian Coast line north to Porthmadog or south to Barmouth. Most travellers see it as one night, or as a stop on the coast railway.

Get around

The town is small and walkable, but the hill is real: the castle sits above the lower town and the direct lanes are steep and narrow. One lane is one-way downhill. The railway station is on the Cambrian Coast line, with trains to Barmouth, Dolgellau (via bus) and Porthmadog. Buses 38 and 39 link Dolgellau, Barmouth, Harlech and Porthmadog; check current timetables before you rely on them.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The hill between the lower town and the castle is very steep; some lanes are one-way and narrow.
  • Road signs send drivers to a car park at the foot of the castle rock, from which the climb is hard work. There is a small pay car park by the castle entrance.
  • On-street parking in the old town is free but spaces are few and the roads are tight.
  • Many cafés and restaurants close out of season and on some weekdays; check before you plan an evening meal.
  • Mobile signal and card payment can be patchy in the surrounding hills; carry some cash.

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the steep, narrow lanes, wet slate underfoot, and fast tides and currents on the beach. Tell someone your walking plan in the Rhinog hills.
