Harkers Island
Go for one night or a half-day: the waterfowl museum, a decoy shop and a 15-minute ferry to Cape Lookout. Skip as a base — beds are few.
Harkers Island is a low, wooded island at the end of US-70 in North Carolina's Down East, about 30 minutes east of Beaufort. It is a working fishing and waterfowling community of roughly 1,200 people, not a resort: one museum, a handful of marinas, one motel and a ferry dock for Cape Lookout National Seashore. Come for the decoy-carving heritage, the clams and the boat ride, then sleep in Beaufort or Morehead City if you want choice.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- Beds on the island are very limited: book the marina motel or a rental weeks ahead, or sleep in Beaufort.
- Restaurant days off and hours vary by season: call before you drive out.
- Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms; mosquitoes near the marsh at dusk.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov: watch forecasts and know your evacuation route.
- Cell coverage can be patchy on the island and on the barrier islands.
Very safe for visitors; the real risks are heat, thunderstorms, rip currents on the ocean side and boats that stop running when the wind picks up. Lock the car and use normal care at night.
