Harbin is China's northernmost major city and the capital of Heilongjiang, built on the China Eastern Railway and shaped by Russian, Jewish and White Russian settlement in the early 20th century. Its draw is the winter Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, Central Avenue's architecture, and a cool, breezy summer that is a break from the heat further south. Two nights covers the core; three if you add the ice festival or a day trip.

Get around
Metro Line 1 runs under Dazhi Street and Line 3 loops the city; buses cover everywhere else but are slow and signed in Chinese. Taxis are cheap (¥8 flag fall, ¥1 per 500 m, ¥1 fuel surcharge) but drivers rarely speak English — show the Chinese characters for your destination. Streets are laid out on a 45-degree tilt, so compass directions are useless; navigate by landmarks.
