Give Hanzhong one full day plus one for a mountain or shrine run: 2 nights, base in the city centre, come in late March–April for rapeseed or October for clear air.
Hanzhong sits in the Han River basin between the Qinling and Bashan ranges, 1.5 h from Xi'an by high-speed rail. It is a Three Kingdoms stop — Zhuge Liang's Wuhou Shrine, Dingjun Mountain — plus rapeseed fields in spring and mountain parks in summer. Two nights covers the city sights and one outlying site; the food is Sichuan-leaning and cheap.

The centre is small enough to walk. City buses are cheap and cover most sights; taxis and Didi are easy to flag and short hops cost little. Hanzhong is calm and low-crime for a Chinese city of its size. The real risks are mountain roads after rain, summer heat and humidity, and spicy food if you are not used to it.
