Hanover
Hannover
Give Hanover one full day: the Red Thread walk, Herrenhausen gardens and the New Town Hall dome. Add a second night only for a trade fair or a Zoo day.
Hanover is Lower Saxony's capital and a rail junction: 1 h 30 min from Berlin, 1 h 20 min from Hamburg by ICE. The centre was rebuilt after 1945, so the draw is the baroque Herrenhausen gardens, the New Town Hall and the world's largest exhibition grounds, not an old town. Most travellers pass through in a day; a trade fair fills every bed in the city.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Ticket checks are frequent and the fine is €60; stamp your ticket before boarding.
- Trade fairs (Messe) sell out hotels weeks ahead and double prices: check dates before booking.
- Cycling in the pedestrian zone is allowed only 19:00–11:00.
- Bikes need working front and rear lights; fines run €20–35.
- Taxis are expensive: a 7- or 9-seat taxi ordered by phone costs the same as a normal one for a group.
Hanover is a calm, well-lit city; the real risks are pickpockets around Hauptbahnhof and Kröpcke, bicycles on pavements, and the €60 fare-dodging fine if you ride without a validated ticket.
