Hanmer Springs
Give it one night, two if you want a full day of trails: the hot pools plus a short walk fill a day, and there is little else in town.
Hanmer Springs is a small alpine spa village of about 840 people on a spur off State Highway 7, roughly 90 minutes from Christchurch. The hot pools are the reason to come; forest trails, mountain biking and jet boating on the Waiau River fill the rest. It is a two-night stop on a Christchurch-to-West Coast drive, not a destination on its own.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- The pools are the main draw and get busy in school holidays and on winter weekends: go at opening or after 18:00.
- Winter brings ice on paths and the Lewis Pass road can close in snow: check the NZTA journey planner before driving.
- Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on forest trails and the river: tell someone your route.
- Book beds ahead for July school holidays and long weekends; the village is small and fills up.
Very safe for a small resort town; the real risks are winter ice on paths, cold water in the river and driving the passes in snow. Standard NZ precautions apply.
