Hammamet is Tunisia's oldest resort town, on the Gulf of Hammamet about 65 km south of Tunis. It splits into two halves: the old medina with its 16th-century fort and the low-rise hotel strip, and Yasmine Hammamet, a purpose-built resort with a marina 10 km south. Two or three nights covers the fort, the beach and one day trip; the town itself is small and most visitors come for the sea, not the sights.

Taxis are cheap and the default way to move between the medina, Hammamet Sud and Yasmine Hammamet; agree the fare or ask for the meter before you set off. Scams and watch-outs
- Men at the airports offer to take your trolley and then charge for it: say no and keep hold of your bags.
- Agree taxi fares or insist on the meter; unmetered rides from the airport or station are where overcharging happens.
- Beach and medina vendors are persistent; a firm no is enough.
- Summer heat and strong sun on the beach: shade and water, especially with children.
- Many resort hotels close or run at low service from November to March: confirm before booking.
Hammamet is a well-established resort and generally safe for tourists; the real friction is taxi and vendor pricing, plus summer heat. Use hotel safes, keep bags zipped on the beach, and treat the closed dinar as cash-only outside hotels.
