Hamilton
Give Hamilton one night as a Wimmera stop: the Ansett museum, botanic gardens and a pub bed, then drive on to the Grampians or the coast.
Hamilton is a sheep-and-wool service town of about 9,300 people on the Henty Highway, halfway between the Grampians and the South Australian border. It has one real museum, a botanic gardens with a small zoo, and a handful of old pub rooms. Most travellers use it as a bed and a meal between Halls Gap and Mount Gambier, not as a destination in itself.

Get around
A car is the practical way to reach Hamilton and to see anything outside the centre. The town itself is flat and walkable: the botanic gardens, Gray Street and the Ansett museum are all within about 20 minutes on foot of each other. V/Line coaches link Hamilton with Ballarat and Melbourne; check the timetable before you build a day around it.

Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
- Ask what a place is called in the local language on tours; many parks now use dual names (Uluru / Ayers Rock, K'gari / Fraser Island).
- 'How are you going?' is a greeting, not a question needing a full answer.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long: Halls Gap is about 1 h by car, Mount Gambier about 1 h 30 min, Melbourne about 3 h 30 min.
- Fuel up in Hamilton before heading west or into the Grampians; the next big stop is a long way off.
- Kangaroos and deer on the Henty Highway at dawn and dusk.
- Summer can hit 35 °C+ with total fire bans; check the CFA rating before a driving day.
- Pub rooms are old and often share bathrooms: confirm what you are booking.
A quiet country town; the real risks are highway driving at dusk, summer heat and fire bans, and long gaps between fuel stops.
