Hamilton is New Zealand's fourth-largest city and the service centre of the Waikato, on the country's longest river. It is not a sightseeing city: it is a cheap, well-placed bed between Auckland, Waitomo, Hobbiton and Raglan, with one genuinely good attraction in Hamilton Gardens. Most travellers pass through on SH 1 or stop one night; two nights only if you want the Gardens plus a day trip.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Victoria Street, the river path and the museum are within 20 minutes on foot. Buses (Bee Card, about $2 a trip in the city, weekly cap) cover the suburbs but run infrequently in the evening. Hamilton Gardens and the zoo need a bus, taxi or car. Te Huia train runs to Papakura for Auckland connections on weekdays and Saturdays.
