Hamelin is a Weser Renaissance town of about 57,000 people, 50 km southwest of Hanover, built on the Pied Piper legend. The old town is compact and walkable in half a day; the carillon, the museum and the half-timbered streets fill a full day. Most travellers come as a day trip from Hanover on the S5 and do not need more than one night.

Get around
The old town is small enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes. Buses cover the outer districts; the S-Bahn S5 and S51 run to Hanover about every 30 minutes, and the RB 77 'Weser train' links Hildesheim, Elze, Rinteln, Löhne and Bünde. Bikes are useful for the Weser Cycle Route.
