Hämeenlinna
Give Hämeenlinna one full day and one night: the castle, Sibelius's birthplace and Aulanko ridge. More than two nights and you run out of city.
Hämeenlinna is Finland's oldest inland town, 100 km north of Helsinki on the main Helsinki–Tampere rail line, and the reason to stop is Häme Castle, a medieval red-brick fortress on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. The centre is small and walkable in an afternoon; Aulanko's ridge and observation tower sit 3 km north. Most travellers pass through on the train between Helsinki and Tampere, and one night is enough unless you add the Parola Tank Museum or a lake cruise.
