What the area is like
Central Hamburg is made of two old districts, Altstadt and Neustadt, plus HafenCity, the new quarter built over the old port south of Altstadt. Between them they hold most of the city's headline sights: the Binnenalster lake in front of the city hall, the Speicherstadt warehouse canals, and the Elbe waterfront with its river views.
This is also Hamburg's main shopping and office zone. Department stores, chain shops and the offices of large companies fill the streets, and the restaurant mix leans towards high-end places serving well-off locals and visitors. It is busy in the day and calm after the shops close.
Greenery and nightlife are elsewhere. For air and space, look to the Aussenalster and Stadtpark in the North, or the long riverbank in Altona-St. Pauli, which also has the bars and clubs.

Eating and drinking
The centre covers both ends of the scale. Around the city hall and the shopping streets you find quick lunches, bakeries and department-store food halls; towards the canals and HafenCity the kitchens get more ambitious and the bills larger. For a cheap, filling meal, look at the streets around the main station.

Getting there and around
