Get around
The centre around Hamamatsu Station is walkable, but the city is sprawling: the dunes, Lake Hamana, the caves and the northern valleys need a bus, the Entetsu Akaden line or a car. Buses take a ticket on entry; the number on it matches the fare board at the front. The JR Tokaido line and the Tenryu-Hamanako line cover the wider area.

- Bus and train services thin out in the northern valleys; last connections matter.
Hamamatsu is a safe city by any standard; the real risks are the winter wind, summer heat, the undertow at Nakatajima and long waits at thinly served rural stops. Keep cash for small buses and rural shops.
