Halifax
Give Halifax 2–3 nights: walk the waterfront and Citadel in a day, then use it as a base for Peggy's Cove or the South Shore.
Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and the hub of Atlantic Canada, built around one of the world's largest natural harbours. The walkable downtown sits between the Citadel hill and the water, so most of the city fits in a day or two on foot. Add a night or two for day trips along the coast.

Get around
Downtown Halifax is walkable: the waterfront, Citadel, Pier 21 and Spring Garden Road are all within about 30 minutes on foot. Halifax Transit buses and the harbour ferry cover the rest; the Dartmouth ferry is the quickest cross-harbour link. Taxis and rideshare fill the gaps, and a car only makes sense for day trips.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings ice and snow; pavements can be slippery from Dec to Mar.
- Hurricanes and heavy rain can reach Halifax in autumn: check forecasts before coastal day trips.
- Some harbourfront and Barrington Street venues post no prices; ask before you order.
- The airport bus does not give change and airport ATMs may not break $20 notes: carry small bills or a transit ticket.
Halifax is generally safe for tourists; the main issues are winter ice, occasional late-night disorder around the downtown bar strip, and coastal weather on day trips. Standard city precautions apply.
