Halifax airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Halifax sits in West Yorkshire, between Leeds and Manchester, and has no commercial airport. Almost every visitor lands at Leeds Bradford or Manchester and covers the last leg by train, bus or taxi. The table below compares the realistic combinations by cost and door-to-door time.

Times assume no major disruption. West Yorkshire traffic is heavy on weekday mornings and late afternoons, so a taxi can lose 15–20 minutes against the estimates below.

Halifax has one station, Halifax, on the Calder Valley line, with direct services toward Leeds, Bradford Interchange, Manchester Victoria and Blackpool. From Leeds the run is short and frequent; from Manchester you usually change at Leeds or Bradford Interchange, though some services run through.

Buy an Advance ticket online 4–12 weeks ahead if your date is fixed. Walk-up fares bought on the day are much higher, and a railcard cuts roughly a third off most tickets. Tickets bought to Halifax are valid into the station in the town centre, so no onward bus is needed.

From Leeds Bradford there is no rail station on site. You reach the network by bus or taxi to Leeds, Bradford or Horsforth, then continue by train. Allow extra time at peak hours.

Local buses connect Halifax with Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and the surrounding Calder Valley, and they are the cheapest way to cover short hops. They are slower than the train and less useful for airport legs, because no single bus runs from either airport to Halifax.

For the airport leg, take the airport shuttle or a local bus to the nearest rail or bus interchange, then continue. National Express and Megabus serve Leeds and Bradford coach stations, from where you can reach Halifax by train or local bus. Fares are low, but the total journey is long and involves at least one change.

A taxi straight from the airport is the simplest option with luggage, and the only one that works well late at night. Expect roughly £45–65 from Leeds Bradford and £70–100 from Manchester in 2026, depending on traffic and time of day. Book ahead for a fixed price; metered fares can climb in congestion.

Pre-booked private transfers cost a little more than a rank taxi but remove the queue and the language of meters. Rideshare coverage around both airports is patchy, so do not count on it as your only plan. If you arrive after the last train, a taxi or an airport hotel night is the practical answer.

The cheapest sensible plan is bus or shuttle to a rail station, then an Advance train ticket. The fastest comfortable plan is a pre-booked taxi. Everything else sits between the two.
