Halen
Skip as a base: Halen is a half-day stop for the 1914 battlefield museum and the Gete watermill, done from Diest or Hasselt.
Halen is a small Limburg municipality of four villages — Halen, Zelem, Loksbergen and Zelk — between Diest and Hasselt. Its one draw is the 1914 Battle of the Silver Helmets and its museum; the rest is farmland, sunken lanes, watermills and a monastery. There is no station and almost no hotel beds, so you visit on the way, not as a base.

Get around
No train station: the nearest is Diest, then bus. Buses are sparse on Sundays. The villages are flat and linked by quiet lanes, so a bike or a car is the practical way to reach Zelem, Loksbergen and Zelk. Parking is free throughout.
