Hahndorf
Go as a half-day or one-night stop from Adelaide: 26 km, 30–40 min by car, 1 h by bus. Two nights only if you want the wineries and Heysen trailheads.
Hahndorf is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, settled in 1838 by Lutheran migrants who arrived on the Zebra under Captain Dirk Meinerts Hahn. One main street holds the bakeries, pubs, cellars and craft shops; the surrounding Adelaide Hills hold the strawberry farm, the Heysen studio and winery cellar doors. Most visitors come from Adelaide for the day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses back to Adelaide thin out in the evening; check the last departure before you book dinner.
- Cellar-door tastings and the strawberry farm are seasonal: confirm opening before you drive out.
- The main street is a highway with through traffic: use the crossings.
Very safe. The real risks are highway traffic on the main street, hot summer days with little shade, and one drink too many before a hills drive.
