Give Hagen one day for the open-air museum and Hohenlimburg castle, or skip it and sleep in Dortmund or Wuppertal instead.

Hagen sits where the Ruhr industrial belt meets the wooded Sauerland, and about 42% of the city is forest. It is a rail junction rather than a sightseeing base: the two things worth a trip are the LWL open-air museum of craft and technology and Schloss Hohenlimburg. Most travellers pass through on the way to Dortmund, Wuppertal or the Sauerland.

Get around

Hagener Straßenbahn AG runs trams and buses inside the VRR fare network; a single ticket covers Hagen plus neighbouring Ruhr towns by zone. The centre is walkable, but the open-air museum and Hohenlimburg castle need a bus or train. Buy tickets in the app or at the KundenCenter (Körnerstr. 25, Mon–Fri 08:30–18:00, Sat 09:00–14:00; Graf-von-Galen-Ring 24, Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00, closed weekends).

Scams and watch-outs

  • Hagen Hauptbahnhof and the area around it are fine by day; keep normal city caution after dark and do not leave bags visible in a parked car.
  • The open-air museum is a hillside site with steep paths: wear shoes with grip and allow three hours.
  • Casino Hohensyburg is 18+ with passport or European ID only, has a dress code and charges a €5.00 day ticket (2024 price — check); it sits in Dortmund, not Hagen.
  • Some regional trains (RE34) bypass Hagen Hauptbahnhof and stop at Hohenlimburg instead: check which station your train uses.

Hagen is a normal mid-size German city and safe for tourists by day; the practical risks are pickpockets around the station, dark riverside paths at night and wet, slippery trails in the hills.
