Hadley
Base in Northampton or Amherst and drive into Hadley for Route 9 shopping and the Skinner summit; Hadley itself is a 2–3 hour stop, not a base.
Hadley is a farm-and-mall town of about 4,800 people on the Connecticut River, wedged between Northampton and Amherst in the Pioneer Valley. It has the valley's biggest shopping strip on Route 9, a 1752 house museum, and the summit road up Mount Holyoke at Skinner State Park. Most travellers sleep in Northampton or Amherst and treat Hadley as a half-day by car.

A car is the practical choice: Route 9 runs the length of town and most of Hadley has no sidewalks. The Norwottuck Rail Trail crosses the south of town and links Northampton, Hadley and Amherst by bike. PVTA buses run between Northampton, Hadley and Amherst, but service is thin in the evening.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No sidewalks along much of Route 9: walkers and cyclists share the shoulder with fast traffic.
- Skinner State Park's summit road is seasonal and closes in winter; check before driving up.
- Route 9 backs up badly on weekends and around the November–December holidays.
- Taxis and rideshare are sparse and can take a while to reach you; do not rely on them after a late dinner.
- Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are not final.
Very low street crime; the real risks are Route 9 traffic with no sidewalks, winter ice, and deer on the river roads at dusk.
